Synthetic content, whether media created or materially assisted by artificial intelligence, has moved from experimentation into mainstream brand operations. AI now generates copy, images, video, voiceovers, product descriptions, and executive thought leadership at scale. For CEOs, that shift raises a question that cuts well past the marketing function: how does synthetic content affect brand credibility, and what does it cost when credibility erodes?
Trust is no longer a soft metric. It shapes purchase behavior, loyalty, pricing power, regulatory exposure, and long-term brand equity. Credibility, once a communications concern, has become a balance sheet issue.
The Baseline: Consumer Trust in Digital Content Is Already Fractured
Even before AI-generated content became pervasive, consumer confidence in digital information was deteriorating. Accenture's Life Trends 2025 report, which surveyed more than 24,000 people across 22 countries, found that over half now question the authenticity of online content more than they did before, and 33% have personally encountered deepfake attacks or scams in the past year. Among that group, 62% name trust as a primary factor in deciding whether to engage with a brand at all.
That skepticism predates AI-generated marketing. It arrives through the door alongside every brand interaction, which means companies are not starting from neutral ground. They are starting from a deficit.
The Paradox: AI Can Build Trust or Eliminate It
The relationship between AI use and consumer trust is not linear. A 2025 Attest survey of 5,000 consumers across the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia found that 43% would trust information provided by an AI chatbot or tool, up from 40% the year before, and that 40% of current AI users consider AI search results more trustworthy than organic search results. A separate Optimizely study found that nearly one-third of consumers have already made a purchase based solely on an AI-generated response, and 87% of those buyers reported satisfaction with the outcome.
The same research documents the conditions under which that trust collapses. The Optimizely study found that 75% of marketers have little to no confidence in how their brand appears in AI-generated summaries — a gap that matters because consumers making purchasing decisions often rely on exactly those summaries without ever visiting a brand's website.
Trust in AI-generated content is also category-dependent. Research from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business found that consumers are more willing to defer to AI for practical or utilitarian purchases, but resist it for emotionally loaded decisions. AI content is more tolerable in product specs and customer service, and far less so in executive messaging, cause-related marketing, or crisis communications.
The Perception Problem: Labels Change Everything
One of the more reproducible findings across consumer research is that disclosure of AI authorship shifts audience perception, regardless of content quality. A 2024 Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions study found that when consumers were shown identical ads — one labeled "AI-generated" and one not — they rated the labeled version as less natural, less useful, and less credible, and reported lower intent to purchase. The content was identical. The label was not.
A Yahoo and Publicis Media study of more than 1,200 U.S. consumers found something that cuts the other way: AI-generated ads with visible disclosures produced a 73% lift in ad trustworthiness and a 96% lift in overall company trust compared to undisclosed AI ads. The operative phrase is "noticed disclosures." The trust lift came not from disclosure alone but from disclosure that answered an implicit consumer question: why?
Disclosures that explain purpose — why AI was used, what benefit it delivers to the customer, and what safeguards govern its use — perform differently than boilerplate labels. Transparency without context often reads as admission rather than accountability.
The Detection Gap: Consumers Are More Exposed Than They Know
Many consumers believe they can identify synthetic content on sight. The evidence does not support that confidence. Conjointly's September 2025 study found that consumer detection ability has declined to near-chance levels: real images were correctly identified only 49% of the time, and AI-generated images only 52% of the time. Only 9% of respondents correctly identified at least 70% of the images they were shown, while 42% described themselves as confident or extremely confident in their detection abilities.
That overconfidence creates a specific reputational hazard. Consumers who believe they would have recognized synthetic content are more likely to feel deceived when they later learn they encountered it. The emotional response to retrospective discovery tends to be sharper than the reaction to upfront disclosure, even when the underlying content is accurate and benign.
The Commercial Cost
The financial consequences of trust erosion are measurable. A 2024 Bynder study of 2,000 consumers in the U.S. and U.K. found that 52% report reduced engagement with content they believe is AI-generated. Research published in the Journal of Business Research found that AI-generated emotional communications elicit what the authors describe as "moral disgust" and reduce brand loyalty and positive word-of-mouth. Only 38% of consumers hold a positive sentiment toward AI, against 77% of advertisers who do — a sentiment gap that will widen as AI-generated content grows more prevalent and consumers grow more attuned to it.
The GEO Variable
Those trust dynamics extend beyond a brand's own content into territory most executives have not yet mapped. Generative Engine Optimization — GEO — refers to the practice of structuring a brand's content, citations, and digital footprint so that AI systems accurately and favorably represent it when answering user queries. Where traditional search optimization targets ranking positions on a results page, GEO targets inclusion and framing within AI-generated answers themselves.
When a consumer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity about a brand, the AI draws on whatever signals it has — third-party articles, forum posts, review platforms, structured data, and authoritative citations. Brands that have not managed those signals have no reliable way to know what consumers are being told about them, or how often. A company with strong traditional SEO but no GEO strategy may rank well on Google and still be misrepresented or omitted every time an AI answers a relevant question. At the scale AI search now operates, that gap is not a communications problem. It is a revenue problem.
What Executives Should Do
AI-generated content warrants the same oversight infrastructure as financial disclosures or crisis communications — not because it is inherently dangerous, but because its reputational surface area is large and the consequences of mismanagement are measurable. That means establishing formal review for high-stakes content, setting explicit rules for where AI may and may not replace human authorship, and training communications teams on the risks associated with undisclosed or inaccurate synthetic output. Executive communications, crisis messaging, and emotionally oriented brand content remain the categories where human authorship carries the most demonstrable trust premium.
Monitoring is not optional. Brands should track sentiment related to AI use, watch for engagement drops between synthetic and human-produced content, and query major AI platforms regularly to understand how they describe the brand. GEO belongs on that same checklist: knowing what AI systems say about your brand, and actively shaping those signals, is now part of basic reputational hygiene.
The underlying principle is that volume is not the goal. In a content environment where virtually anyone can generate material at scale, authenticity — perceived and actual — is the scarcer resource. Organizations that treat synthetic content as a production shortcut rather than a credibility risk will find the cost shows up eventually, in engagement data, loyalty curves, or brand valuation.
